FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What do I need to prepare for the audition?
All student seeking to audition will need to prepare a few things before your scheduled time. Showing that you can follow directions and be prepared is the first part of your audition. All students will sing the 1st verse of "My Country 'tis of Thee" (1st verse). Students will also be singing a harmony part for the 1st verse of "My Country 'tis of Thee". Women will learn the Alto part. Men should prepare the harmony line designated for Alto, Tenor, or Bass (whichever is most comfortable for you).
2. What happens in a typical audition?
A few quick exercises are done to determine the singer’s vocal range, tonal memory, and sightreading skills. The student will then be invited to sing the melody and harmony of "My Country 'tis of Thee". The conductor may have the student sing portions of the song in different keys to determine the most comfortable range for the singer.
3. Can I audition for more than one choir?
Yes. The audition process is designed to take each singer through a series of exercises to determine his/her best and most appropriate choir placement. All singers are initially considered for all choirs. Final placements are determined by considering singer interest, audition performance, and schedule availability.
4. Can I audition for more than one voice part?
Yes. This will happen in one audition time, but each singer is thoroughly tested to determine his/her most appropriate voice part. The decision is made by considering the singer’s vocal range, color, and tone clarity.
5. Are auditions scary?
They don't have to be! I try my very best to make the audition process easy for all singers. My advice to those who are nervous is to prepare well! If you know your songs and what to expect, then it won't be scary at all! I look forward to seeing each of you!
6. If I don't get into the choir I auditioned for, does that mean I am a bad singer?
Not at all!! One of the hardest parts of being a choir teacher is deciding each year who will fill in the spots of the auditioned choirs. There are so many qualified singers, and often there are more qualified singers than there are spots. If you do not get selected for one of the auditioned choirs, we STILL NEED YOU. All of you have wonderful voices and contribute to each choir that you are in. I hope that each of you will continue with the choirs regardless of the outcome of auditions.
